Statement on the Sanctity of Human Life and Human Love

The Council of Major Superiors of Women Religious recognize in the communication of human life and human love a sacred gift from the Heart of the Blessed Trinity: in life, the gift of His image; in love, the call toward His Likeness.

Affirming the dignity of every person, however small or incapacitated, the CMSWR opposes any disregard for the sacredness of human life and particularly calls attention to the injustice of abortion and euthanasia. Willed into existence by a deliberate act of love by God, each unique human life Aremains forever in a special relationship with the Creator, who is its sole end.(1 Donum Vitae, 5 ) The taking of innocent human life is never a good; the Council believes the reasons many give for doing so present a call for greater generosity on the part of the community towards those experiencing difficulties and towards the most vulnerable. While strongly condemning abortion, the CMSWR never condemns women and men who suffer its effects, but rather invites them to the hope and healing found in Jesus and His Church.

Practices such as the destruction of embryos for the sake of scientific research, or the use of aborted children for the sake of scientific research, and human cloning of any kind radically violate the sacredness of human life. The CMSWR supports legislative efforts to ban such practices.

The gift of life is welcomed and protected in the family, which is founded upon marriage. In raising human love to reflect the complementary and fruitful gift-love of the Blessed Trinity, God ordains marriage as a lifelong commitment of mutual self-gift between a man and a woman and sanctifies it with His own presence and grace. Recognizing the graced link between life and love, the CMSWR opposes practices such as contraception and the immoral use of reproductive technology that invites the creation of human life outside of natural marital relations.

Marriage, established and sustained by God, is unchangeable in definition and is a fundamental good for men and women, for the family, and for the whole of society and culture. While the CMSWR upholds the dignity of every human person regardless of sexual orientation, the Council unequivocally supports efforts to establish legislation in defense of marriage (DOMA) in order to witness to the good of this God-given gift and to safeguard its sacred nature.
