The charism of the Sisters of St. Francis of the Martyr St. George – to make the Merciful Love of Christ visible – begins with the incomparable gaze of Christ upon each and every young woman who enters the Congregation. This call to return love for Love, to “look upon Him Whom we have pierced” (Jn. 19:37), expresses the core of what it means to be a Sister of St. Francis of the Martyr St. George.

Founded by Mother M. Anselma Bopp in 1869 in Thuine, Germany, the Congregation sent five Sisters to the United States in 1923, where there are now more than 120 Sisters in sixteen convents. They serve Christ and the Church in a variety of apostolic works: health care; education, child care, care of the elderly, parish and diocesan office work; domestic service in bishops’ households and priest retirement homes and service to their own Sisters.

Their convents are located in the following cities: in Alton, Illinois, where their Provincialate and Novitiate are also located; Springfield, Champaign, and Rock Island, Illinois, St. Louis and Wildwood, Missouri; Tulsa, Oklahoma; Lincoln and Hastings, Nebraska; Kansas City, Kansas; South Amboy and Somerset, New Jersey; Steubenville, Ohio; Washington, D.C.; La Crosse, Wisconsin; and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Sisters also serve in missions in Brazil.

Entrance requirements are: ages 18-30 (exceptions can be made); good physical, mental and emotional health; appropriate personal maturity; and the desire to give oneself totally to the Heart of our Lord.
