The order of Carmel traces its roots to the Old Testament, where on Mt. Carmel, the prophet Elijah was "filled with jealous zeal for the Lord God of Hosts," (1 Kings 19:10). Carmel means "enclosed garden," so the soul of each Carmelite is that enclosed garden where God alone dwells. Mary, who is the Queen and Beauty of Mt. Carmel, inspires all Carmelites to live a life in imitation of one who ponders all things in her heart and wholeheartedly goes out in charity to those in need.

Venerable Mother Maria Luisa Josefa of the Most Blessed Sacrament, Foundress of the Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Los Angeles, began her dream of uniting the spirit of Carmel with an active apostolate in 1921. Today, 150 Sisters follow in her footsteps. Their life is characterized by: A life of prayer and union with God, a deep love for Jesus in the Holy Eucharist and devotion to Our Blessed Mother. They are steadfast in fidelity to the Magisterium of the Church and have a constant desire to be of service to the needy poor. Their apostolates include: Day Care, Education, Health Care and Retreat Work. Young women ages 18-35, with good physical and mental health, who desire to live a deep union with God through prayer, a strong fraternal life in community and apostolic charity wherever one is placed, may seek entrance. The initial formation program consists of 1 year Candidacy, 6-9 months Postulancy, 2 years Novitiate and 6 years of Temporary Vows.
