The Congregation of the
Daughters of Divine Charity, F.D.C. was founded by Mother Franciska
Lechner in Vienna, Austria, on November 21, 1868. We are an
International Congregation with provinces throughout Europe, and North
and South America. The group of sisters that founded St. Mary Province
in Akron, Ohio, were sent from a province of the Congregation of the
Daughters of Divine Charity in Croatia. Our lives are dedicated to
service to God and to the Church, especially the poor. We strive to
become a source of hope, a credible, visible sign of God's goodness
through our apostolates: education, parish ministry, and residences for
young women and the elderly. At the request of the pastor of Visitation
of the BVM Parish, Sister M. Lenora Vurnik, F.D.C. (Superior) and four
other sisters arrived in Rankin, Pennsylvania, on September 4, 1926, to
work among the Croatian immigrants who made their living working in the
Pittsburgh steel mills. Soon their services were requested by other
parishes in Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, Wisconsin, and Connecticut.
The Daughters of Divine Charity came to Akron on August 18, 1943, at the
request of the late Msgr. Michael Domladovac, pastor of Christ of the
King Parish. St. Mary Province was established in Akron, Ohio, in 1950.
The sisters are now missioned in the Diocese of Cleveland where they
teach and maintain a residence for the elderly and for young women. The
sisters teach in West Allis and Mayville in Wisconsin; in Miami and Key
West in Florida; and New York City (deaf center). Applicants are
required to have at least a high school diploma. |
